Artist Statment
He we call scientist, versus he we call artist: we are one in the same. Artist and scientist parallel one another via the practice and pursuit of knowing and exploring.
Scientist and/or artist have been mystified by the physical sensation of sight in a world comprised of matter and light. Endless questions arise for both artist and scientist as to the comprehension and visual representations of concepts thereof. The process of seeing can be explained with the use of various scientific models and philosophical theories, however the experiential gift of sight can only bridge our perception to imagine what is in fact there, and thus is, and what could be.
My background as both an artist and computer engineer has bred an insatiable desire to explore new concepts and the relationships they dictate. My work tends to be a progressive investigation of perspective via explorations of objects, symbols, data and their relationship to one another. More so, I am focusing on digital video and photography as a means to experiment with the construct of the narrative and sequences of images with motion as a way to deconstruct what is considered a traditional chronology.

Written Statment
It is one of my foremost beliefs that fine art and science are not mutually exclusive entities. I consider both disciplines to be irrevocably interrelated, both coalescing towards like-minded mentalities utilizing similar processes in doing so. I have a long established interest in both the artistic and scientific realms as related to digital mediums. I have been doing my own research on the subject since my formative years; my senior project in high school focused on the digital arts and its multi-faceted relationship with various technologies, science, and art. This interest led me to pursue the Digital Arts and Science [DAS] program at the University of Florida, which was constructed to form a collaborative environment between the university’s fine art and computer science departments. The DAS program emphasized a strong knowledge base in both disciplines in order to encourage interplay and blur boundaries between the notion of artist, and that of technical engineer.
Currently I am employed at JILA as a digital media specialist/art director where I work closely with various scientists, researchers, writers, and other like-minded individuals. Working in this intensive research environment exposes me to new sources of concepts and ideas that in turn influence and inspire my creativity and personal work. Such a unique academic setting allows me to pursue new scientific modalities while exploring how they might interrelate with my current body of work.
I plan to continue working with digital video and photography, experimenting with the constructs of a traditional narrative via deconstructed sequencing of images with motion, and multiple screen projections. Likewise, I’d like to continue my workings with data/symbol representations and the abstractions of data into new visual componentry.
My current study is to utilize what I have been exposed to as an employee at JILA, and apply my knowledge and visual interpretations to my digital studies. Ultimately, I’d like to further the dichotomous explorations of scientist as artist, and artist as scientist.
